Project Information

What is this Project about?

Mobile wireless services are quickly evolving. As wireless infrastructures are deployed, the rapid adoption of multimedia messaging and interactive services will have a heavy impact on traffic usage patterns. Services such as real-time MM messaging, video streaming and conversational services with rich video content are expected to rise in popularity. From a traffic perspective these services tend to exhibit a peaky and highly correlated behaviour. This leads to worse-than-planned network performance, increasing the possibility of bottlenecks.

This study will examine the requirements of new traffic models for these new services. Such models will incorporate descriptions of different traffic types, likely customer behaviour and service requirements that would influence traffic.

What are the main objectives of this Project?

The main objectives of this Study are to:

  • Define a typical set of environments,
  • Select a representative set of services to typify the target wireless environments,
  • State acceptable GoS / QoS parameters,
  • Characterise traffic from a statistical perspective to enable load estimations,
  • Extract time and volume characterisation for pricing modelling purposes.

What are the key results for this Project?

This study will attempt to answer the following questions:

  • What will next generation of wireless traffic look like?
  • What level of QoS will they require - what will be the impact on network?
  • What are the requirements for devising a model (or models) for this type of traffic?

What relationship exists to other organisations or bodies?

Project P1112 NEW DIMENSIONS output will be considered. Other available results from recent and ongoing projects and studies (e.g. on localisation services and gaming applications) may be used to tune-up some of the service profiling to be done.
