Abstract: |
This Eurescom study investigates and discusses solution approaches to mitigate and overcome the problem of IPv4 address exhaustion that is expected to happen by the end of 2012 or the beginning of 2013 at the latest. According to the common understanding the only long-lasting and future-proof solution to this problem is the introduction and complete migration of all IP services to IPv6. But most migration strategies of Telcos and ISPs are based on Dual-Stack mechanisms that still need IPv4 addresses for their realisation - even after the date of IPv4 address exhaustion. This study investigates several technical approaches for extending the lifetime of the available IPv4 address pools focusing mainly on three “IPv4 address sharing” mechanisms - NAT444, Dual-Stack lite and “Address + Port”. The objective of this study is to provide Telcos and ISPs with the knowledge to understand the impact of the investigated IPv4 address sharing solutions and to give them some recommendations and guidelines that help to identify the most suitable solution that fits best to their concrete network scenarios and business plans. |
