Rationale
Authentication of users to access telecommunication services is
required to secure the users and network/service providers
rights. In the case of the fixed network authentication of the
user is traditionally associated with the subscriber line. New
services, if accessible everywhere, or services which support the
mobile user, require authentication of the user. Studies in this
area are carried out by ETSI NA7 (Universal Personal
Telecommunication), ETSI TE9 (IC cards), ITU-T SG 1 and EURESCOM.
Authentication is also needed more and more between end-users
(e.g. tele-banking). The interest of authentication is therefore
growing: both users and network operators have to be aware of the
need and the possible techniques. From the user point of view a
uniform authentication to get access to services is required.
