The Green Planet

The Green Planet is an exhibition in London which provides visitors with an augmented reality experience in which they can traverse a series of plant-based biomes, guided by a David Attenborough avatar viewed through a 5G-connected smartphone. The photo shows a user in the exhibition, enjoying The Green Planet experience.

CHARITY project meeting in Heidelberg

The CHARITY project meeting in Heidelberg, Germany on 14-15 October 2021 was the first in-person project meeting organised by Eurescom since the Corona pandemic spread across Europe more than 1.5 years earlier. It was also the first in-person encounter of the CHARITY partners, 9 months after the project had started. The photo shows Antonis Protopsaltis from ORamaVR demonstrating CHARITY’s virtual-reality based medical training use case.

Another virtual meeting

The new reality of European research and innovation events in times of corona looks like this: two people –Jean-Eric Paquet, Director-General Research and Innovation, and Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth – are standing on a stage in Brussels. The four panelists in their session sit in their (home) offices across Europe. And so do all the participants watching the panel session.

The snapshot, or in this case rather screenshot, was taken at the European Research and Innovation Days on 22nd September 2020.

Further information is available on the European Research and Innovation Days website at
https://research-innovation-days.ec.europa.eu/ and in the event article in this issue of Eurescom message.

World’s first graduation ceremony with avatars

On 28 March 2020, the world’s first graduation ceremony with avatars took place in Tokyo, Japan. Kenichi Ohmae, president of the Graduate School at BBT University, handed over diplomas to two “newme” communication avatars, who represented the graduates. The avatars provided by ANA Holdings were remotely operated by the graduates. Due to the coronavirus lockdown, they were not able to attend the ceremony in person.

Tunabot

Mechanical engineers at the University of Virginia`s School of Engineering have developed a robotic fish, which mimics the speed and movements of a real yellowfin tuna.

The aim of the robotic tuna project was to better understand the physics of fish propulsion. The research could eventually inform development of the next generation of underwater vehicles, driven by fish-like systens instead of propellers.
