A World’s first – the Eurescom led ESA ARTES 5G GOA project demonstrates 5G-NR direct connectivity in Stand Alone mode over a geostationary satellite in Ku band

The Eurescom led ESA ARTES 5G GOA project demonstrated 5G New Radio direct connectivity in Stand Alone mode over a geostationary satellite in Ku band at the 39th International Communications Satellite Systems Conference (ICSSC 2022), 18-21 October, Stresa, Italy – a World’s first. The demonstration used occasional use capacity from the SES Astra 2F satellite and relied on the suitably adapted OpenAirInterface ™ software implementation for a 5G base station and a 5G nomadic node, mounted in a van equipped by a 45 cm satellite dish.

5G GOA is a collaboration between Eurescom GmbH, Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, University of Luxembourg SnT – Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust and Bundeswehr University Munich (https://artes.esa.int/projects/5ggoa).

Eurescom-led 5G GOA project publishes extended KPI GUI for OpenAirInterface™ covering NTN

Following earlier announcements, the Eurescom-led ESA ARTES project 5G GOA has published an extended KPI graphical user interface (GUI) for the OpenAirInterface™ open-source code that supports 5G Non-Terrestrial Networking aspects. The code is available for immediate use in the public OAI repository at: https://gitlab.eurecom.fr/oai/openairinterface5g/-/commits/goa-5g-kpi-gui.

The project also created a merge request, so the modifications and improvements will be merged and integrated into the main development branch of OAI shortly.

Eurescom-led 5G-GOA project contributes non-terrestrial network extensions to OpenAirInterface™

Following its earlier announcement, the Eurescom-led ESA ARTES project 5G-GOA has published the modified and extended OpenAirInterface™ open-source code that supports 5G Non-Terrestrial Networking according to 3GPP Release 17, supporting direct connectivity over geostationary satellites. The code is available for immediate use in the public OAI repository at: https://gitlab.eurecom.fr/oai/openairinterface5g/-/commits/goa-5g-ntn. The project also created a merge request, so the modifications and improvements will be merged and integrated into the main development branch of OAI shortly.
