ELE – European Language Equality

With a large and all-encompassing consortium consisting of 52 partners covering all European countries, research and industry and all major pan-European initiatives, the European Language Equality (ELE) project develops a strategic research, innovation and implementation agenda as well as a roadmap for achieving full digital language equality in Europe by 2030. The whole project is designed in such a way that all individual work streams create input for the strategic agenda, for example, in terms of empirical evidence, desk research or technology deep dives.

EURO 5G

EURO 5G – Coordination and support action for the 5G Infrastructure PPP (CSA)

The primary objective of the Euro-5g project is to facilitate effective and efficient co-operation and integration between all projects of the 5G-PPP, the European Commission, The 5G-Infrastructure Association, Networld2020 ETP, related projects from EUREKA, and related national initiatives to maximize the European momentum towards, and benefits from, the future 5G integrated, ubiquitous and ultra-high capacity networks. The metrics for evaluating the success of 5G PPP will be based on the KPIs included in the 5G-PPP Contractual Arrangement signed by the 5G Infrastructure Association on behalf of the European ICT Sector and the European Commission in December 2013.

This project is closely linked with the 5G-Infrastructure Association and will strive to ensure there is a seamless integration of the European industrial policies, as generated by the association, with the work plans of the projects under this program so the results will be as useful and relevant as is possible.

In its work, the Euro-5g project will actively support the 5G-PPP goal to maintain and enhance the competitiveness of the European ICT industry and to ensure that European society can enjoy the economic and societal benefits these future networks will bring in collaboration with the European Commission, the 5G Infrastructure Association, the Networld2020 European Technology Platform and the projects of the 5G-PPP.

FED4FIRE

FED4FIRE – A federation of experimentation facilities will significantly accelerate Future Internet research. Fed4FIRE will deliver open and easily accessible facilities to the FIRE experimentation communities, which focus on fixed and wireless infrastructures, services and applications, and combinations thereof. The project will develop a demand-driven common federation framework, based on an open architecture and specification. It will be widely adopted by facilities and promoted internationally. This framework will provide simple, efficient, and cost effective experimental processes built around experimenters’ and facility owners’ requirements. Insight into technical and socio-economic metrics, and how the introduction of new technologies into Future Internet facilities influences them, will be provided by harmonized and comprehensive measurement techniques. Tools and services supporting dynamic federated identities, access control, and SLA management will increase the trustworthiness of the federation and its facilities. A FIRE portal will offer brokering, user access management and measurements. Professional technical staff will offer first-line and second-line support to make the federation simple to use. The project will use open calls to support innovative experiments from academia and industry and to adapt additional experimentation facilities for compliance with Fed4FIRE specifications. A federation authority will be established to approve facilities and to promote desirable operational policies that simplify federation. A Federation Standardization Task Force will prepare for sustainable standardization beyond the end of the project. The adoption of the Fed4FIRE common federation framework by the FIRE facilities, the widespread usage by both academic and industrial experimenters, and the strong links with other national and international initiatives such as the FI-PPP, will pave the way to sustainability towards Horizon 2020.

Fed4FIREplus

Fed4FIREplus – Federation for FIRE plus (RIA)

The Fed4FIRE+ project has the objective to run and further improve Fed4FIRE’s “best-in-town” federation of experimentation facilities for the Future Internet Research and Experimentation initiative. Federating a heterogeneous set of facilities covering technologies ranging from wireless, wired, cloud services and open flow, and making them accessible through common frameworks and tools suddenly opens new possibilities, supporting a broad range of experimenter communities covering a wide variety of Internet infrastructures, services and applications. Fed4FIRE+ will continuously upgrade and improve the facilities and include technical innovations, focused towards increased user satisfaction (user-friendly tools, privacy-oriented data management, testbed SLA and reputation, experiment reproducibility, service-level experiment orchestration, federation ontologies, etc.). It will open this federation to the whole FIRE community and beyond, for experimentation by industry and research organisations, through the organization of Open Calls and Open Access mechanisms

The project will also establish a flexible, demand-driven framework which allows test facilities to join during the course of its lifetime by defining a set of entry requirements for new facilities to join and to comply with the federation.

FIRE Experimental Facilities generate an ever increasing amount of research data that provides the foundation for new knowledge and insight into the behaviour of FI systems. Fed4FIRE+ will participate in the Pilot on Open Research Data in Horizon 2020 to offer open access to its scientific results, to the relevant scientific data and to data generated throughout the project’s lifetime.

Fed4FIRE+ will finally build on the existing community of experimenters, testbeds and tool developers and bring them together regularly (two times a year) in engineering conferences to have maximal interaction between the different stakeholders involved.

Full-5G

Full-5G – Fulfilling the 5G Promise

his Full5G project has a prime objective to facilitate the activities of the European 5G Initiative, as outlined in the 5G contractual Public Private Partnership (5G PPP), during its’ third phase from September 2019 to August 2021.

In addition to this, the Full5G project has an objective to capture and promote the achievements of the 5G PPP and monitor impact these results have had on the evolution of 5G in Europe over the period of life of the 5G PPP.  This work will also look to the future and consider what additional actions are necessary to maintain the European momentum and leadership in 5G, as it moves towards Smart Networks, and facilitate the uptake of 5G by the European vertical sectors.

The Full5G project will work to progress the 5G PPP high level goal of maintaining and enhancing the competitiveness of the European ICT industry, and seeking European leadership in the 5G domain. Part of the strategy to do this will be to support activities where the 5G PPP can contribute to the implementation of the European 5G Action Plan, which was published by the EU Commission in September, 2016.  The Full5G project also has the underlying ambition to ensure that European society, via the Vertical sectors, can enjoy the economic and societal benefits these future 5G networks will provide.

Another key part of the anticipated Full5G project work will be the review and promotion of the results of the 5G PPP as a whole. The project will prepare an Impact Analysis that will capture the impact of the PPP on the evolution of 5G in Europe and seek to correlate this to the social and economic trends emerging from the uptake of 5G.  It will be early for this report as the full impact of 5G will not be experienced within the life of the project but the objective is to document the value added to the European economy and society by this strategic investment in 5G. This is an essential step contributing to planning of future private and public investments for 5G-enabled smart networks the Horizon Europe vision builds upon.

INSPIRE-5Gplus

The Horizon 2020 project INSPIRE-5Gplus will advance security of 5G and Beyond networks. Grounded in an integrated network management system and relevant frameworks, INSPIRE-5Gplus is entirely devoted to improve security at various dimensions, i.e., overall vision, use cases, architecture, integration to network management, assets, and models. INSPIRE-5Gplus will address key security challenges through vertical applications ranging from autonomous and connected cars to Critical Industry 4.0.

IORL

IoRL – Internet of Radio Light (RIA)

Wireless networks in buildings suffer from congestion, interference, security and safety concerns, restricted propagation and poor in-door location accuracy. The Internet of Radio-Light (IoRL) project develops a safer, more secure, customizable and intelligent building network that reliably delivers increased throughput (greater than 10Gbps) from access points pervasively located within buildings, whilst minimizing interference and harmful EM exposure and providing location accuracy of less than 10 cm. It thereby shows how to solve the problem of broadband wireless access in buildings and promotes the establishment of a global standard in ITU. Building landlords will be incentivized to find funding to realize this solution for their properties to increase their value resulting in a stimulated market for broadband networking products in buildings, benefiting society and stimulating the world Gross Domestic Product. IoRL project provides solutions to the two main barriers to develop this broadband networking solution in buildings because it: (i) Brings together a multi-disciplinary team of research institutions and industries in a collaborative project to develop and demonstrate this vision, who otherwise would not have assembled to achieve this goal; (ii) Develops a proof of concept demonstrator, which will act as the basis for standardization of a global solution. The starting point is the joint VLC demonstrator at Tsinghua University & ISEP, the mmWave at Cobham Wireless and the NFV/SDN at NCSR-Democratos. The challenges are to (i) Develop broadband communication solutions for buildings by integrating these technologies to exploit the pervasiveness and accessibility of the existing electric light access points, the broadband capacities of mmWave and VLC technologies and the flexibility of SDN/NFV; (ii) Industrially design a radio-light solution that can be integrated into the myriad of form factors of existing electric light systems and consumer products.

NGI Aatlantic

NGI Aatlantic aims to bridge EU-US research on Next Generation Internet (NGI).

We will push Next Generation Internet technologies a step further, by funding, through a series of open calls for proposals, EU-based researchers and innovators to carry out NGI-related experiments, in collaboration with US research teams.

ORPHEUS

ORPHEUS – Object-based broadcasting – for European leadership in next generation audio experiences

ORPHEUS is a European research project dedicated to improving the management of audio content to create new user experiences. The ten consortium partners will develop, implement and validate a new end-to-end object-based media chain for audio content.

Object-based media is a revolutionary approach for creating and deploying interactive, personalised, scalable and immersive content, by representing it as a set of individual assets together with metadata describing their relationships and associations. This allows media objects to be assembled in groundbreaking ways to create new user experiences. Based on this paradigm, ORPHEUS specifically identified the, often neglected, audio sector to have high innovation potential.

The consortium partners will lay the foundation for facilitating infinite combinations of audio objects in ways that are flexible and responsive to user, environmental and platform-specific factors. This includes innovative tools for capturing, mixing, monitoring, storing, archiving, playing out, distributing and rendering object-based audio.

Many media companies, including partners of this project, are ready to adopt this next-generation media representation but the challenges of real-world implementation and integration are yet to be tackled. ORPHEUS will deliver a sustainable solution, ensuring that workflows and components for object-based audio scale up to enable cost-effective commercial production, storage, re-purposing, play-out and distribution.

The ultimate aim is to bring the fascinating experience of object-based content to mass audiences at no added cost. ORPHEUS will demonstrate the new prodigious user experience through the realisation of close-to-market workflows, proofing the economic viability of object-based audio as an emerging media and broadcast technology. Collectively, the project partners encompass all knowledge and skills necessary to achieve these objectives. To further foster the development of new capabilities in the European content creation industry, ORPHEUS will publish a reference architecture and guidelines on how to implement object- based audio chains.

reTHINK 

reTHINK  Trustful hyper-linked entities in dynamic networks (RIA)

The main goal of the reTHINK project is to design and prototype a new, non telecom centric, but Web-centric P2P Service Architecture enabling dynamic trusted relationships among distributed applications called Hyperlinked Entities (“Hyperties”) that support use-cases beyond commoditized telephony such as contextual and social communications, M2M/IoT and content oriented services. This project will enable any type of service delivery through specialized end-to-end network quality commitments, powered by specialized P2P and/or Cloud services (delivered as SaaS, PaaS or IaaS).
